Type 1 Group Education

TYPE 1 DIABETES TRAINING PROGRAMME:

Aims of the programme:

  • to teach you how to adjust your insulin dose according to your food intake
  • to provide accurate information about diabetes to help you help yourself
  • to pin down the experts and enable you to discuss any burning questions face to face
  • to enable you to learn from others in the same situation as yourself

THE FOUR DAY BERTIE PROGRAMME RUNS ON THE SAME DAY EACH WEEK FOR FOUR CONSECUTIVE WEEKS. THE FIVE DAY DAFNE PROGRAMME RUNS FOR FIVE CONSECUTIVE DAYS. IT IS IMPORTANT TO ATTEND ALL FOUR OR FIVE DAYS, TO BENEFIT FROM THE PROGRAMME

We recognise this may mean you have to take time off work. Most employers are very understanding about this. We can provide information to your employers about the importance of attending, if necessary.

WEEK 1

  • What is diabetes?
  • Action of insulin
  • Nutrition
  • Introduction to carbohydrate counting
  • Insulin:carbohydrate ratio
  • Monitoring
  • HbA1c – What does this mean?
  • Blood glucose targets & correction doses
  • Food/insulin/blood glucose diaries

WEEK 2

  • Feedback from week’s experience
  • Hypoglycaemia
  • Hypoglycaemia unawareness
  • More on Carbohydrate Counting
  • Weighing of dried & cooked recipes
  • Exercise
  • Dose adjustment
  • Walk

WEEK 3

  • Feedback from week’s experiences
  • Nutrition & eating out
  • Hyperglycaemia and keto-acidosis
  • Signs & treatment of keto-acidosis
  • Activity & exercise
  • Reasons for potential hypoglycaemia
  • Dose adjustment

WEEK 4

  • Feedback from week’s experiences
  • Long term complications of diabetes
  • Nutrition
  • Travelling
  • What’s new in diabetes?
  • Dose adjustment
